3-Day Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Adventure

Overview

This 3-day Rwanda Safari Trip is a short but rewarding adventure created for travelers who want to experience mountain gorillas and the beautiful landscapes of Rwanda. Starting and ending in Kigali, the journey combines a city experience with an unforgettable visit to Volcanoes National Park, one of Africa’s most famous destinations for mountain gorilla trekking.

Your Safari Trip begins in Kigali, where you will be welcomed at Kigali International Airport by your professional driver-guide. Depending on your arrival time, you will explore some of the city’s important attractions, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The visit provides valuable insight into Rwanda’s history, recovery, and modern development. You will then travel north toward Ruhengeri and Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, enjoy views of green hills, farms, villages, and the impressive Virunga Mountains.

The main highlight comes on the second day when you enter Volcanoes National Park for a guided mountain gorilla trekking experience. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you will join experienced guides and trackers for a forest walk in search of an assigned gorilla family. The trek may take several hours depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you will have a special opportunity to observe their behavior from a controlled distance for the permitted viewing period.

Your final day includes a relaxed breakfast before returning to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for lunch, souvenir shopping, or visiting local craft markets before your airport transfer. This short Rwanda Safari Trip is ideal for couples, solo travelers, photographers, and wildlife lovers looking for a meaningful gorilla experience within a limited travel schedule.

Tour Plan

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by a company representative and introduced to your driver-guide. Your Rwanda adventure begins with a tour of Kigali, one of East Africa's most attractive and well-organized capital cities.

A key stop will be the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you can learn about Rwanda's difficult past and the country's journey toward reconciliation and development. Depending on your arrival time, the city tour may also include local neighborhoods, markets, and other places of interest.

Later, leave Kigali and travel north toward Ruhengeri, also known as Musanze, near Volcanoes National Park. The drive takes you through Rwanda's famous rolling countryside, with beautiful views of farms, villages, green valleys, and distant mountains.

As you approach the park, the peaks of the Virunga Mountains create an impressive backdrop. Arrive at your lodge, check in, and spend the evening relaxing as you prepare for the following day's gorilla trekking adventure.

Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. Here, park officials will provide a briefing about gorilla trekking rules, safety, and responsible behavior around the mountain gorillas.

You will then be assigned a gorilla family and join your guides and trackers for the trek. The walk leads through thick vegetation, bamboo forest, and mountain slopes. Trekking time varies because the gorillas move freely within their natural habitat.

Finding the gorillas is the most exciting moment of this Safari Trip. You will have the permitted viewing time to watch the gorilla family from a safe distance. You may see adults feeding, young gorillas playing, mothers caring for their babies, and a powerful silverback watching over the group.

After the experience, trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Depending on the trekking time and your energy level, an optional afternoon excursion may be arranged to explore nearby attractions.

Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Enjoy your final breakfast at the lodge while taking in the peaceful surroundings and views of the Virunga Mountains. After checking out, begin your journey back to Kigali.

The drive provides another opportunity to enjoy Rwanda's green countryside and daily village life. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will have lunch before continuing with your departure arrangements.

If your international flight leaves later in the day, additional time may be available for souvenir shopping or visiting local craft markets. This is a good opportunity to purchase locally made baskets, artwork, clothing, and other gifts before leaving Rwanda.

Your driver-guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport in time for check-in and your onward flight. Your 3-day Safari Trip ends with lasting memories of Rwanda's mountain landscapes, welcoming communities, and one of Africa's most remarkable wildlife encounters.
