7-Day Great Migration Safari

Overview

This 7-day safari offers the full spectrum of Tanzania’s iconic wildlife experiences. From the Great Migration in the vast Serengeti plains to the majestic Ngorongoro Crater and the elephant-rich Tarangire National Park, all capped off with a walking safari in Arusha National Park, this itinerary is designed for those seeking both adventure and awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Tour Plan

Your safari adventure begins early with pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. After a short briefing, your personal safari guide will take you on a scenic drive through the highlands en route to the Serengeti.

Once inside the park, the focus will be on tracking the Great Migration—a once-in-a-lifetime experience where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles roam in search of water and fresh pasture. These immense herds attract a range of predators, offering a rare chance to witness wildlife action up close.

Enjoy a picnic lunch and a full afternoon game drive before heading to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Farm of Dreams Lodge

After an early breakfast, you’ll head out for a full-day game drive, focusing on the migration hotspots. From July to September, the herds gather around the Mara River, often resulting in dramatic and dangerous crossings where crocodiles and predators wait in ambush.

Lunch will be served picnic-style in the bush. The rest of the day will be spent either following the herds or searching for predator sightings such as lions or leopards in the trees.

Later in the evening, settle in at your tented camp for dinner, a sundown gathering, and a chance to share stories by the campfire.

Accommodation: Sound of Nature Tented Camp

Another full day in Serengeti to explore deeper or revisit the migration hotspots. Depending on the previous days’ sightings, you may also focus on trying to complete the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.

Your guide can tailor the day based on your preferences, whether it’s more time with the herds, predator tracking, or birdwatching.

Return to your camp in the evening for dinner and relaxation.

Accommodation: Acacia Migration Camp

Early breakfast before starting a game drive en route to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On your way out of the park, you may visit Olduvai Gorge (optional), one of the world’s most significant paleoanthropological sites.

Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint for lunch and breathtaking views of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Later, continue to Karatu, stopping at the African Galleria for souvenir shopping if time allows.

Enjoy dinner at your lodge and a cultural performance from local artists.

Accommodation: Farm of Dreams Lodge

Start the day with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including rhinos, lions, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers one of the best chances to spot all Big Five in a single game drive.

After lunch in the crater, drive towards Tarangire National Park. Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and prepare for an exciting night game drive, where nocturnal wildlife—including active predators—can be observed.

Accommodation: Tarangire Sopa Lodge

Enjoy a full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park, famous for its ancient baobab trees, and large elephant herds. With the Tarangire River providing year-round water, the park teems with wildlife—lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and over 500 species of birds.

After a picnic lunch in the park, you’ll continue the game drive toward the exit gate and head back to Arusha for an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Kibo Palace Hotel, Arusha

Spend your final day exploring Arusha National Park, a hidden gem often overlooked despite its beauty. Enjoy a game drive with views of Mount Meru, and on clear days, even Mount Kilimanjaro.

Highlights include the 7 Momela Lakes with flamingos and other water birds, the Fig Tree Arch, and sightings of giraffes, zebras, buffalos, and more.

Wrap up the day with a guided walking safari, an exciting way to experience the bush on foot under the protection of an armed ranger.

After lunch, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure.
