1-Day Mount Bisoke Adventure
Overview
This 1-day Rwanda Safari Trip takes you from Kigali to the beautiful Volcanoes National Park for an exciting hike up Mount Bisoke. Rising to about 3,711 meters, Mount Bisoke is part of the Virunga Mountains that stretch across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is famous for its green slopes, mountain forest, and impressive crater lake at the summit.
Your adventure starts early in Kigali, where your driver-guide will collect you from your hotel at around 5:00 AM. Travel through Rwanda’s rolling countryside toward Volcanoes National Park. The drive offers lovely views of farms, villages, valleys, and distant volcanic peaks. On arrival at the park headquarters, you will complete registration and attend a briefing before meeting the ranger who will guide you during the hike.
The Mount Bisoke trail passes through different types of mountain vegetation. Along the way, you may hear or occasionally see some of the wildlife and birds that live within the wider Volcanoes ecosystem. The higher you climb, the more challenging the trail becomes, particularly when conditions are wet or muddy.
Reaching the summit is the main reward of this Rwanda Safari Trip. Here, you can enjoy views of the crater lake and surrounding Virunga landscape before beginning your descent. Weather conditions can change quickly at this elevation, adding to the mountain atmosphere.
After returning to the starting point, enjoy a well-earned meal before meeting your driver-guide for the journey back to Kigali. This Rwanda Safari Trip is an excellent choice for active travelers, hikers, photographers, and nature lovers looking for a challenging one-day adventure beyond Rwanda’s famous gorilla trekking experiences
Tour Plan
Your day begins at approximately 5:00 AM when your professional driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Kigali. Carrying a packed breakfast, you will leave the city and travel north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The drive takes approximately two hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. As daylight appears, enjoy views of Rwanda's famous hills, cultivated farmland, villages, and increasingly mountainous scenery.
Arrive at the park headquarters at around 7:00 AM for registration and a detailed briefing. Park officials will explain the hiking route, expected conditions, safety requirements, and responsible behavior inside the protected area. You will then meet your ranger guide and prepare for the trek. Porter assistance can be useful, especially when carrying water, food, cameras, or other equipment.
Begin your Mount Bisoke hike through thick vegetation and mountain forest. The trail can become steep, slippery, and muddy, particularly during or after rainfall. A good level of physical fitness and proper hiking shoes are therefore recommended.
As you move higher, the landscape changes and views open across the surrounding mountains. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Volcanoes National Park supports several primate, bird, and other forest species.
The highlight comes when you reach Mount Bisoke's summit at approximately 3,711 meters above sea level. Take time to admire the beautiful crater lake and, when weather conditions allow, the surrounding Virunga peaks.
After enjoying the summit, begin your careful descent back toward the trailhead. Meet your driver-guide, enjoy lunch, and relax before starting the journey back to Kigali.
You will be dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your 1-day Rwanda Safari Trip and Mount Bisoke hiking adventure.
