7-Day Kenya & Uganda Wildlife and Gorilla Trekking
Overview
A Midrange Safari Package is a great choice for travelers who want to explore East Africa in comfort without the higher cost of a luxury safari. This 7-day Kenya and Uganda adventure combines exciting wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara with the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It brings together two very different environments, from Kenya’s open golden grasslands to Uganda’s cool and green mountain forests.
Your journey starts in Nairobi and continues to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The Mara is one of Kenya’s leading wildlife destinations and is known for its large population of lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and other plains animals. With three days in the Mara, you have enough time to enjoy several game drives and explore different parts of the reserve.
The Midrange Safari Package is especially rewarding during the Great Migration, normally between July and October. During this period, large herds of wildebeests and zebras move through the Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. However, the Mara offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year, so you can still enjoy memorable game drives outside the migration period.
After your Kenyan safari, you fly to Uganda and continue toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The landscape changes dramatically as the wide savannahs give way to thick rainforest, rolling hills, and mist-covered mountains. Bwindi is famous for its Mountain Gorillas and provides one of the most special wildlife experiences in Africa.
Gorilla trekking is the main highlight of the Ugandan part of the safari. With the assistance of trained rangers and guides, you walk through the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek can take several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you can observe their natural behavior while keeping a safe and respectful distance.
The Midrange Safari Package also gives you opportunities to learn about local communities. A Maasai village visit in the Mara can introduce you to traditional songs, dances, crafts, and ways of life. In Bwindi, community experiences can offer insight into farming, conservation, local crafts, and the important role communities play in protecting the forest and its wildlife.
Throughout the safari, accommodation is selected to offer comfort, good service, and excellent value. Comfortable lodges and tented camps provide private rooms, en-suite facilities, meals, and relaxing spaces after a day of adventure. Professional guides and organized transfers also make the journey easier and more enjoyable.
This Midrange Safari Package is ideal for couples, families, friends, and small groups who want to combine a classic Kenyan safari with gorilla trekking in Uganda. In seven days, you experience the wildlife-rich plains of the Masai Mara and the ancient rainforest of Bwindi. It is an exciting East African journey that combines wildlife, nature, culture, and adventure at a comfortable price.
Tour Plan
Your Midrange Safari Package begins with a morning pickup in Nairobi. After meeting your professional driver-guide, you leave the busy capital and travel west toward the Masai Mara. The journey takes you through the beautiful Kenyan countryside, with green farms, small towns, open fields, and traditional homesteads along the way.
One of the highlights of the journey is the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. From here, you can stop for photographs and enjoy wide views across the valley. The dramatic landscape gives you your first taste of the natural beauty that makes Kenya such a popular safari destination.
You continue toward Narok, a busy town and an important center for the Maasai community. From Narok, the landscape gradually changes as you move toward the Mara. Open grasslands begin to replace the farms, and you start to see more acacia trees and grazing livestock.
Around midday or early afternoon, you arrive at your comfortable midrange safari camp or lodge. After checking in and enjoying lunch, you have some time to relax before your first game drive.
Your afternoon game drive introduces you to the incredible wildlife of the Masai Mara. You may see large herds of zebras and wildebeests grazing across the plains, giraffes moving between acacia trees, elephants walking in family groups, and buffaloes feeding in open grasslands.
The Mara is also famous for its predators. Lions can often be seen resting beneath trees or watching nearby herds. Cheetahs may be found scanning the plains for prey, while leopards are more difficult to spot because they often remain hidden in bushes or trees.
As the sun begins to set, your guide drives back toward the camp. The evening light creates beautiful views across the savannah. After dinner, you can relax at the camp and enjoy the sounds of the African night.
Your first night in the Mara marks the beginning of an exciting Midrange Safari Package filled with wildlife and adventure.
Day two is dedicated to exploring the Masai Mara. You wake early and prepare for a morning game drive. The early hours are among the best times for wildlife viewing because the temperatures are cooler and many animals are active.
As the sun rises over the plains, you may see lions returning from a night hunt, hyenas moving across the grasslands, or cheetahs searching for their next meal. Herbivores are also active, with zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, and antelopes spreading across the plains.
Your guide will help you understand the animals and their behavior. You may learn how to identify animal tracks, understand different calls, and recognize the signs of predators nearby.
The Masai Mara is also home to many elephants. Watching an elephant family move across the grassland can be one of the most peaceful experiences of the safari. Young calves often stay close to their mothers while older animals protect the group.
After several hours of game viewing, you may return to your accommodation for lunch and some rest. Alternatively, you can enjoy a full-day game drive with a packed lunch, allowing you to spend more time inside the reserve.
The afternoon provides another opportunity to search for wildlife. Depending on the season and location, you may see buffaloes, giraffes, topis, hippos, warthogs, and many species of antelope.
Bird lovers will also have plenty to enjoy. Eagles, vultures, rollers, storks, ostriches, and other birds can be seen throughout the reserve.
If you visit between July and October, you may have the opportunity to witness part of the Great Migration. Large numbers of wildebeests and zebras move into the Mara ecosystem, creating one of Africa’s most famous natural spectacles.
In the evening, you return to your camp for dinner and relaxation. You can spend the night remembering the day’s sightings while preparing for another exciting day in the Mara.
Your third day gives you more time to discover the Masai Mara. After breakfast, you can choose between another full-day game drive or morning and afternoon game drives.
A full-day safari allows you to travel deeper into the reserve. Your guide can search for areas where wildlife activity is high and spend more time observing animals without rushing from one sighting to another.
The Mara is particularly famous for its big cats. Lions are commonly seen across the grasslands, while cheetahs prefer open areas where they can use their speed to chase prey. Leopards are more secretive and may be found near rivers or resting in trees.
You may also visit areas near the Mara River, where hippos spend much of the day in the water. Crocodiles can sometimes be seen resting along the riverbanks.
If you are interested in local culture, an optional Maasai village visit can be arranged. During the visit, you can learn about Maasai traditions, traditional dances, crafts, livestock keeping, and the relationship between local communities and wildlife.
The cultural experience adds another side to your Midrange Safari Package. The Masai Mara is not only a wildlife destination; it is also a place where people and wildlife share the same landscape.
Later in the afternoon, you return to the reserve for another game drive. The soft evening light is excellent for photography, especially when animals are silhouetted against the setting sun.
After your final evening in the Mara, you return to camp for dinner and relaxation. Tomorrow, your safari continues into Uganda for a completely different experience.
After breakfast, you leave the Masai Mara and prepare for the next part of your Midrange Safari Package. Depending on the flight schedule, you transfer to the appropriate airstrip for your flight toward Nairobi or directly onward as arranged.
The flight gives you a different view of East Africa. From the air, the landscape changes from Kenya’s open savannahs to greener areas and eventually the tropical surroundings of Uganda.
You arrive in Entebbe, located beside Lake Victoria. Your Ugandan representative meets you at the airport and assists with your transfer to your accommodation.
After check-in, you have time to relax following the journey. Entebbe offers a peaceful atmosphere, with green gardens, tropical vegetation, and views toward Lake Victoria.
Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a relaxed afternoon or take a short optional excursion around Entebbe.
Dinner is served at your accommodation, giving you time to prepare for the next stage of the adventure.
The day provides a smooth transition between Kenya and Uganda. The excitement of the Masai Mara is replaced by the anticipation of entering Bwindi’s ancient rainforest.
After breakfast, you transfer to the airport for your flight toward southwestern Uganda. The flight provides beautiful views of Uganda’s countryside, including green hills, farms, forests, and small communities.
On arrival, your local guide meets you and begins the transfer toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey through the Ugandan highlands is scenic, with winding roads, green hills, farms, and villages along the way.
You arrive at your comfortable midrange lodge near Bwindi and enjoy lunch before settling into your room.
The afternoon can be spent relaxing or enjoying an optional community experience. Depending on the lodge and local arrangements, you may visit nearby communities, craft centers, farms, or tea-growing areas.
These activities offer an opportunity to understand the people who live around Bwindi and the importance of tourism to local communities.
Your guide will also provide a briefing about the following day's gorilla trek. You will learn what to carry, how to behave around the gorillas, and why following ranger instructions is important for both visitors and wildlife.
After dinner, you rest early because the following morning begins one of the most exciting experiences of your Midrange Safari Package.
Today is the main highlight of your Uganda adventure. You wake early, have breakfast, and transfer to the park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing.
Experienced rangers explain the trekking rules and introduce you to the forest environment. You are then assigned to a gorilla family and begin your trek into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The trek can take several hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. Bwindi is a thick rainforest, so the trail can sometimes be steep, muddy, or difficult. Good walking shoes, comfortable clothing, and drinking water are important.
As you walk through the forest, your guide and ranger help you identify different plants, birds, tracks, and other signs of wildlife.
The forest itself is part of the experience. Tall trees, thick vegetation, mist, vines, and bird calls create an atmosphere very different from the open plains of the Masai Mara.
Eventually, your trackers locate the gorilla family.
The moment you see the gorillas can be deeply moving. A large silverback may be resting nearby while mothers care for their young. Juveniles may play, climb, or move through the vegetation. The experience allows you to observe these remarkable animals in their natural environment.
Gorilla trekking is carefully managed to protect the animals and their habitat. Visitors must follow the instructions given by the rangers and maintain the required distance.
After your permitted viewing time, you begin the trek back through the forest. Once you reach the starting point, you return to your lodge for lunch and rest.
The afternoon is free for relaxation. You may enjoy the lodge gardens, read, take photographs, or simply enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings.
Dinner brings the day to a memorable close. After experiencing the wildlife of Kenya and the gorillas of Uganda, you have completed two of East Africa’s most special wildlife experiences.
Your final morning begins with breakfast at your lodge. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to enjoy the surroundings before beginning your journey back to the airstrip.
You say goodbye to the forest and travel toward the airport for your flight to Entebbe.
As you travel, you have time to reflect on the experiences of the previous six days. You have watched predators and large herds in the Masai Mara and then entered the ancient forest of Bwindi in search of Mountain Gorillas.
On arrival in Entebbe, you connect with your international flight or continue to your next destination.
Your Midrange Safari Package ends with memories of Kenya’s golden savannahs, Uganda’s green forests, incredible wildlife, and the warm welcome of local communities.
For travelers looking for an affordable yet comfortable East African adventure, this seven-day journey offers a strong combination of wildlife, culture, nature, and adventure.
